Trouble with installation. When I try to install anything, it opens PS automatically

I have tried to follow the instructions. I have a MacBookPro, Version 10.10.5 running
Photoshop CS5. When I close Photoshop before I try to install the .dmg from Topaz, (which is in the downloads folder) it immediately wakes up Photoshop, which gives me a message saying that it doesn't know how to handle this type of file.

I don't know what to do. I think I did something which caused this chain of events and I don't know what it is. Unfortunately I had to uninstall another piece of software this week and reinstall it. I found that I can't reinstall it because the same thing happens, clicking on a .dmg file calls Photoshop to open, and I get a message saying that PHotoshop doesn't know how to handle this type of file (OF COURSE IT DOESN"T).

There must be something wrong in the preferences but I can't find it. What SHOULD these apps be pointing to? How do I change this? I am in a mess and all my work is at a standstill!
